July 17th, 2010 Frances’ Fire Escape Catio

Living in a third-floor railroad car apartment in Brooklyn, you don’t have many options for allowing cats outdoors, but Frances got creative and made a lush little catio on her fire escape. Using pre-cut lumber and easy to carry materials from her local hardware store, she enclosed the area and added lots of greenery. The cats seem to be enjoying their little getaway.

Here’s a view of the fire escape B.C. (before catio).

How nice! These cats look quite happy. Just goes to show that, no matter where you live or how small your space, you can build something your cats will enjoy, if you really get creative. The plants add so much to it, and thanks for choosing plants safe to cats!

Fantastic, I love how nothing stops the savvy pet owner from designing a space that works for the entire “family” !!! Two paws up.

That is an awesome idea but is it still…umm…escapeable? That doesn’t break a building code or something?

I also live in the same kind of building in Brooklyn and have wanted to fix up my fire escape but have the same concerns as Jessica. Can you take it apart while not in use? Also, do you cover up the top of the fire escape? But I love the idea! Would like to rig up something similar.

I would love to do my fire escape like this, but don’t know how to do the fencing part. If there is someone who can actually install the fencing for me, or knows of a company that would do it, I’d pay for the service. (I live in NYC where everything is deliverable:) Please let me know. THanks.
